Born 7/25/1924 at Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, Nancy was the 1st born of Violet Gulliford and Carl William Lucks, owner of the Lucks company in Seattle. During her youth the family lived in the Laurelhurst and Broadmore neighborhoods, with summers spent at their home on Bainbridge Island.
She attended Garfield High school and then the U of Wash where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Liberal Arts degree in 1946. During that time she met Kenneth D. Moores and they married in 1947. They moved to Portland Oregon where Ken attended medical school, followed by an internship in Evanston, Illinois. During this time Nancy did secretarial work for professors and doctors. After 7 years the couple returned to the Northwest where Ken had a position as a radiologist at the Virginia Mason Hospital. They bought a home in Windermere and their son Kenneth Jr. was born, followed by daughters Debra, born in 1954 and Laurie born in 1956. Her son Ken died in 1970 from a tragic accident on his job.
Nancy returned to further her education and earned a Masters degree in social work at the University of Washington in 1964. She worked in various social work positions at the U of W before entering private practice in marriage and family therapy.
She continued to work as a marriage and family counselor until retirement. She travelled extensively, kept educating herself, handled her own financial affairs and enjoyed art, cultural pleasures, good books, films, theater and opera. She lived in the Windermere neighborhood until after retirement when she moved into University House ERA assisted living facility. She continued to enjoy travel and participating in activities sponsored by the U of W retirement association and bonding with her friends at University House.
The final 2 years of her life was spent in an adult family home where she was cared for until her passing.
Nancy was a lifelong advocate of women’s rights and contributed time and energy to many social causes. She was a member of the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Art Museum, St. Stevens Episcopal Church and Universal Unitarian Church.
She taught us compassion, generosity, fairness, curiosity and courage. She valued knowledge and truth and pursued them both with a passion. She loved art, music, the theater, literature and good food. Most of all she loved her family and friends, and illustrated the simplest most cherished of human values; true goodness and unconditional love.
