Carolyn Crawford Hicks, a beloved wife, mother, and teacher of first graders, passed into the Loving Hands of her Lord on Monday, March 5, 2018 while undergoing palliative care at the Hospice of East Texas.
She was born on June 26, 1929 to Lillian Glass Crawford and Raymond Crawford. A valedictorian and cheerleader at Gaston School, she studied elementary education at what is now known as the University of North Texas. It was there she met Glenn P. Hicks and that soon led to their marriage which was in its 69th year. After some early years teaching school in the valley near Mexico, she moved to Tyler where she taught 1st grade at Ramey Elementary, Peete Elementary and Birdwell Elementary. During those years, she had determined that at least 993 first graders had passed through her classrooms.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Marjolyn Hicks, and her sister Marjorie Stevenson.
She is survived by her husband, her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Julie Hicks, and grandson Mark Hicks and granddaughter McKensie Hicks, as well as by her niece Marlinda Stevenson Thomason.
Carolyn will be buried in a family service on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, her family would like to encourage prayers of gratitude for her years of service and dedication to her community, her family, and her extended family of first graders.
She would welcome memorials on her behalf to the Hospice of East Texas, the American Diabetes Association, or Fairwood United Methodist Church of Tyler.
