Rev. Carlos Hernandez, who served as the pastor of Iglesia Bautista Northgate in Sacramento, California for more than 50 years, went to be present with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 8, 2018. He was 90 years old. He retired from active ministry in 2014 and was named Pastor Emeritus at the same church where he continued to support the Lord’s work. As he so often stated, “A pastor never truly retires.”
Carlos was a resident of Citrus Heights for 58 years. He is survived by his wife, Azeneth, his daughter, Miriam Hernandez-Garcia (Long Beach, Ca), and his son, Carlos Hernandez III; his grandchildren, Jonathan V. Hernandez, Lara A. Garcia (Long Beach, Ca), and Jacqueline N. Hernandez; siblings, Ruben Hernandez (Houston, Texas), Oscar Hernandez (Houston, Texas), Jonathan Hernandez (Grand Prairie, Texas), and Samuel Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas); and many nephews and nieces in California and in Texas.
Carlos was born in Musquiz Coahuila, Mexico on May 25, 1927 to Carlos and Amalia Hernandez Rios. When he was a young boy, he and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas. His father was also a minister and he often recounted memories of helping his father in his ministry. In his youth, Carlos came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. From that time forward, Carlos dedicated his life to doing God’s work.
In 1960, he and his wife, Azeneth, moved their family to California. They became members of Northgate Southern Baptist Church and over the years, he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Director, Music Director, Treasurer, Interim Pastor, and finally as Pastor in March 1981. He served on the Executive Board of the California Southern Baptist Convention for six years and on the Board of Directors for California Baptist University for two years (1974-1976). He also served as a Chaplain for Cal Expo and for the penal systems in Sacramento for many years.
Before Carlos became a full-time pastor, he was a Civil Engineer. He worked for a local engineering firm and then later, he and a partner founded their own engineering company, Cal Geometrics. This was one of several accomplishments that he enjoyed.
Carlos and Azeneth were married for 62 years, whom he loved dearly. She was his best friend and together, they raised their children in the admonition of the Lord. Throughout his life, Carlos was a true example of God’s love, faithfulness, and perseverance. His greatest joys were his family, watching his children and grandchildren grow up and become successful, his football team, the Dallas Cowboys, and loving and serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phillippians 4:13
