Joyce was born in Houston, Texas to George Earl and Edna Elizabeth Coon on January 26, 1930. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and was a proud Alumnus of their Scottish Brigade. She received a Diploma in Nursing from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1950. She loved to tell stories from her nursing school days when she lived in the dormitories with the Sisters. Nursing school is where she was given her lifelong nickname. Her best friends called her “Coon” or “Coonie”. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years. She left the hospital to raise her three girls, but later returned to nursing as the Health Unit Coordinator for the Federal Occupational Health Clinic in downtown Houston. She was a Registered Nurse for over 46 years. Joyce loved to bowl, fish, boat and she always looked forward to a good poker party. She believed in the importance of family and had many treasured friendships that truly lasted a lifetime. She outlived many of her closest friends, but she knew she would eventually be reunited with “The Gang” once again. Joyce lived her life as a devout Catholic with her last parish being St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park, Texas.
Joyce is preceded in death by her brother Robert Lee Coon and her parents George Earl and Edna Elizabeth (Shannon) Coon.
Joyce is survived by her children Sharon Anne, Mary Margaret (Frank) and Mary Elizabeth (Danny). She found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren Michael and Ilicia, Ruby, Alex and Max. Her dreams of becoming a great grandmother were fulfilled when she became Great Grandma to Zach and Izzy.
Joyce was just born with a nurturing soul. In addition to her family, she loved and was loved by many others who viewed her as a mother or grandmother figure. They all just called her “Momma Joyce”, “Momma Carver” or “Grandma Joyce”. She looked upon all of them as family.
The family of Joyce Carver wishes to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to her many physicians, nurses and caregivers. Joyce was blessed to have received the same compassionate type of care that she had always felt so honored and privileged to provide her patients.
Joyce dedicated her personal and professional life to caring for others. In lieu of flowers, the family requests simple acts of kindness to be performed in her memory. The organization, individual or facility may be anything close to your heart.
