David William Tuttle went to be with God on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at the age of 91. He was born in New Orleans on May 19, 1926. Beloved husband of Dorothy Lou Lawrence Tuttle for 68 years. Loving father of Dorsee Underwood, Laurie Tuttle, and Marie Bouchereau (William). Grandfather of Rebecca Lambert, Matthew Underwood, Amanda Underwood, David Bouchereau, Alexis Bouchereau, and Emily Bouchereau. Great grandfather of Lucas Underwood and Liam Underwood. Son of the late William Walter Tuttle and Ethel Holland Tuttle and brother of the late Beverly Seirsdale and Elizabeth Scheser. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
David attended public elementary and secondary schools in New Orleans as well as Tulane University from 1943 to 1944. Afterwards, he served his country in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After receiving an honorable discharge, he enrolled in Maybin Export-Import Institute in New Orleans where he graduated in 1948. He became licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department as an Individual Customshouse Broker on May 29, 1952.
David was previous president and owner of George William Rueff Custom House Brokers and Freight Forwarders, which was established in New Orleans in 1870, and received the first issued brokers license on March 6, 1917. He was a member of the World Trade Club, Traffic & Transportation Club of Greater New Orleans, International Freight Forwarders & Custom Broker Association of New Orleans, and National Custom Broker and Freight Forwarders Association of America, as well as, numerous other business organizations.
Dave was an early member of the Third District Volunteer Fire Department, serving as President and Chief intermittently throughout his firefighting days. He was also active in various civic and social organizations, including the American Legion and VFW. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church for many years, serving on the vestry and teaching Sunday school.
He was a wonderful southern gentleman who loved everything about New Orleans culture, especially the food. He loved football season and enjoyed the family getting together to watch the LSU Tigers and the Saints. His enthusiasm for his beloved city was infectious.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the medical professionals who took care of Dave: Dr. David Snyder, for whom he had so much confidence and respect and Dr. Ka-Yan Tong for her special care. Also thanks to the medical professionals in East Jefferson Hospital’s cardiac care unit, CCU, and cath lab. Special thanks to Rosemarie and the rest of the staff at Visiting Angels, along with Guardian Angels Hospice for their attentive care.
A visitation will be held from 10:30 AM to 2 PM on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans. A grave site service will follow in Lake Lawn Park.
