WEST COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Kenneth Howard Hughes, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be active and retired members of the SC Highway Patrol. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Hughes died Sunday, May 13, 2018. Born in Flinstone, Ga., he was a son of the late Adrian Lindell Hughes and Thera Ophelia Butler Hughes. He served in the Air Force for 4 years and later worked for SC Highway Patrol for 36 years where he retired as a Lieutenant. He was a member of Jamil Shrine Temple, SC Troopers Association, and served on the board of South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association. With his pilot license, he volunteered his time with the Shriners to fly kids to receive medical treatment. He enjoyed simple country living. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother and will be missed by many.
Surviving are his spouse, Carol L. Hughes of West Columbia; daughter, Sheilah C. Dixon (David) of Columbia; sons, Troy Hughes (Darlene) of Columbia, Kelly Hughes (Tammy) of Lexington, and Cliff Hughes (Tammy) of Prosperity; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Hargis of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
