Jane Carpenter Pitcher died on June 12, 2018, two days before her 91st birthday on her beloved Flag Day. Jane was born in Newtonville, MA but lived in Crescent City, FL in her early years. Both of her parents died separately in the 1930s, with the result that Jane and her brothers were raised by their aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Henry Beers of W. Hartford and Glastonbury, CT. The three Beers children welcomed their Carpenter cousins into their home where they all lived together during their formative youthful years. Jane was a joy as a youngster, making lifelong friends wherever she went. She graduated from the Oxford School and Elmira College where she met and married Robert J. Pitcher of Elmira. They lived in Elmira for many years, but left permanently for the South in the late 1960s. Unfortunately, Rob died of lung cancer in 1979. Jane devoted herself to her family, church and friends. Her daughter Pamela was killed in an unfortunate automobile accident in Raleigh in 1993, and Jane’s life took on new excitement and challenge as she raised her granddaughter Cynthia as if she were her own daughter. The two of them grew and prospered together through love and happiness. Son Rick Pitcher has been an inspiration as he has managed Jane’s declining health in a caring and respectful way. Jane loved her church, North Raleigh Presbyterian, where she had been a Deacon and a regular attendee when her health permitted.
Survived by son, Rick Pitcher, Raleigh NC; granddaughter Cynthia (Stephen) Topley, Cary NC; brother Tom (Gretchen) Carpenter, Charlotte NC; sister in law, Pat Carpenter, Concord CA; and many nieces and nephews. Jane was predeceased by her brother William Carpenter, St. Pete Beach FL.
Memorial service will be held at N. Raleigh Presbyterian Church (11905 Strickland Rd) on Saturday, July 14 at 2:00 pm. Memorials may be made to NRPC or a charity of your choice in honor of Jane.
