He was born March 2, 1924 in Mitchell County, Texas to A.K. McCarley Sr. and Mamie Watlington McCarley.
A.K. was a lifetime member of the community who believed faithfully in God, country, and, family, and he was proud of the time he spent in the Navy as a WW2 Veteran. A.K. was a man who had a “Servant’s Heart”, every day he would get up in the morning and ask himself what he could do for someone else. He was a man who believed in the love of family, always making sure to care for his wife, his children, and grandchildren and to teach them the importance of God and hard work. A.K. was a great role model for family and friends alike, always making sure to be kind and gentle to others, while never losing the big smile he kept on his face. Everyone that knew A.K. could tell you he was a man who paid attention to details, making sure to articulate everything just right.
For many years A.K. could be seen working on his farm, The Seldum Rest Farm from sun-up to dark-thirty, making sure to get up every night to change his irrigation pipes. After retiring from the farm A.K. spent many years working as a funeral attendant at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home, which was a job that was perfect for him as he had never met a stranger and could be seen as a people person. In his spare time he enjoyed going to garage sales and picking up one of many things he collected, especially coffee cups as he was an eclectic collector. A.K. was a member of the First Baptist Church of Colorado City and a member of Kiwanas, he will be dearly missed by the many who knew him.
A.K. is survived by his children; Doug Bolon and wife Vickie of Middleburg Florida, Mona Crockett and husband Bill of Colorado City, Charlsa McCarley of Fort Worth, Donna Starr and husband Jack of Colorado City, and Cathy Hill and husband Mark of Tucson Arizona. He is also survived by his grandchildren Will, Andy, Sam, Don, Ruben, Talva, and Blaine, as well as six great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Jane McCarley in August of 1987 and by his second wife Sue Hart McCarley in January of 2014. He was also preceded in death by his three sisters Geraldine Holtkort, Florence Walker, and Blanche Bell.
A funeral service for A.K. will be held on Wednesday, June 27th at 10 am at the First Baptist Church of Colorado City with Doctor Jerry Shields officiating. The family will be present for a visitation on Tuesday night June 26th from 6-8 pm at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
