Margaret J. Johnson passed away on Monday, July 2nd . Margaret was born in La Crosse, WI, on January 9, 1924, the first daughter of Otto and Thora Larsen. Following graduation from Central High School in 1941, Margaret attended La Crosse Vocational School for Secretarial Studies, and worked at the La Crosse Rubber Mills until she attended Trinity Bible College where she met John I. Johnson whom she married in 1951.
Together Margaret and John served churches in Raymond, NH and Brooklyn, NY where their son, Kevin T. Johnson was born. They returned to New England when John was called to West Congregational Church in Concord in 1953 where they served for 39 years until his retirement in 1992. Margaret and John were a ministry team with Margaret directing the choir, playing piano, serving as the church secretary, and whatever was required to support John and Kevin. Margaret and John were the ultimate advocate for their son Kevin. Always challenging Kevin and the systems supporting Kevin, they would always advocate something better for Kevin. Today, with the support of a caring family, Kevin has become a part of the Concord community – just like Mom and Dad.
Margaret is survived by her son, Kevin T. Johnson; sisters Helen and husband Verne Witt, Jane and husband Roland Larter, Janet and husband Ronald Eagon, brother-in-law David Morris, a cousin Paul Rom, and nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her husband the Rev. John I. Johnson, and sister Dorothy Morris.
A Service of Celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 24th at 10:00 AM at West Congregational Church, 499 North State Street, Concord. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Otto L and Thora Larsen Memorial Fund, established in 1983 by the Larsen family in memory of Margaret’s parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Otto L Larsen, to be used to recognize and assist students preparing for either pastoral or missionary ministry.
