Mr. Venables retired from The Daily Times after 43 years in June 1990. He was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Salisbury where he served for 20 years as an usher at the 8am service. In 1966 he was appointed and commissioned Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay with Rank and Respect by former Governor J. Millard Tawes. He was a past Commander and charter member of the Wicomico Yacht Club. Past Commander and lifetime member of the Salisbury Power Squadron. Appointed to the National Power Squadron Governing Board “Amenities” after earning 54 Merit Marks, and life member at the Elks Lodge #817 in Salisbury.
He served with the US Merchant Marines during WWII enlisting at the age of 17 and served for four years with the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Cathy Venables; grandson, Tommy Venables, Jr. and his wife Emily; and two great-grandchildren, Boston and Braylan Venables. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Lee Venables; and his son, Tom Venables.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10am at St Peters Episcopal Church, 115 St. Peter’s St. Salisbury, MD 21801. The Rev. David Michaud will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Andrews Episcopal Cemetery in Princess Anne.
