Of Jackson, passed away on Monday, September, 3, 2018 at the age of 78, while under the kind and compassionate care of the staff at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Smak. Joann is survived by her husband of 31 years, Carl Hammock; five children: Ed (Aleisha) Smak, Wendy Elkins, Eugene “Deno” Smak, Dawn Carter, and David (Terri) Smak; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sister, Judy Bailey; as well as many nieces, nephews, loving family members, and friends. Joann was born to Addison and Louise (Piper) Coffey in Jackson on May 7, 1940. She is a 1958 graduate of Napoleon High School and also graduated from Foote Hospital School of Nursing in 1969. Joann was employed as a R.N. at W.A. Foote Hospital for 20 years. She was a lifetime member of the Women of the Moose where she held every office title within her membership. She lived an active life and enjoyed golfing, bowling, quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and tatting. She had a strong Faith in the Lord and was a member of the Michigan Center Bible Church (150 Broad Street, Michigan Center, Michigan 49254) where a service honoring her life will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 12:00 noon with Pastor John Tovey officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation at Chas. J. Burden & Son Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home in her honor will be greatly appreciated.
