Hubert "Layne" Morris of Pleasant Grove passed away on September 7, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha Sanford Morris and Hubert Clinton Morris, and a host of dear aunts and uncles. He was born December 13, 1942 in Vernon, Alabama and graduated from Ensley High School in 1962. He worked at National Woodworks, Inc. until attending and graduating from the Alabama Police Academy in 1966. His law enforcement career began in Midfield and Pleasant Grove. In 1978 he accepted a position with the Hoover Police Department where he worked as a patrolman and then as a warrants officer. He retired in 2001 after 34 years of service. He was a proud member of both the Alabama Police Benevolent Association and the National Fraternal Order of Police. He attended church at Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Alexander City. A Master Mason, he began in the Masonic Lodge at Central Park Masonic Lodge No. 808 F. & A.M. and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 909 F. & A.M in Pleasant Grove. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Robin Lane Morris; brother, Donald Richard Morris; sister, Carolyn Morris Jones (Ronnie); double first cousins Patricia Smith (Joe), Barbara Barnes (Ronny), and Michael Morris; niece, Danielle Morris Stanford; three nephews, Jason Clinton Morris, Phillip Thomas Jones, and Robert Patrick Jones (Emma); great-nephews Jake Stanford and Jaxon Jones; great-niece Amelia Jones. He was blessed with numerous close friends including Bob Pass, Hal Holston, Gary Davis, Buster Brooks, John Grainger, Glynda Morgan, the late Billy Jay Morgan, and too many others to list. His greatest source of pride was his daughter, to whom he was a single father for over 10 years. A passionate fan of music spanning almost every genre, he took Robin to as many concerts as possible. He was also an avid fisherman and particularly enjoyed spending time at his home on Lake Martin, where he and Robin were once well known in the Sandy Creek area for their prolific father-daughter spring break fishing trips. Hundreds of crappie were caught, filleted, frozen, and shared with family and friends to enjoy throughout the year. Layne loved to make people laugh; his riotous and contagious laughter, quick wit, and wordplay will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., immediately followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel 800 Dennison Avenue SW, Birmingham, Alabama.
