Dr. Leon Zucker, 85, of Juno Beach, Florida, passed away on September 12, 2018 peacefully at home. Dr. Zucker leaves behind Enid Zucker, his wife of 65 years, son Paul A. Zucker, of Springfield, VA, son Michael D. Zucker and his wife Ann Zucker of Stamford, CT, daughter Julie Z. Chapleau and her husband Mark Chapleau of Grafton, MA, daughter Cara Z. Lowen and her husband Dan Lowen of Winchester, MA and 8 grandchildren: David, Benjamin, Sarah, Ellen, Robert, Zachary, Sophie and Jacob. Leon also leaves his sister Lila Bernstein of Israel, her husband Joel and their children and his sister Susan Schwartz of Arizona, her husband Herbert and their children. He also leaves many cousins throughout the country.
Dr. Zucker was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Leon and Enid were married on April 11, 1953. Leon was the first in his family to go to college and went to New York University for both his undergraduate degree and medical degree, graduating in 1957. During medical school Leon also worked during the weekend on the Long Island Railroad unloading newspapers. After medical school, Leon was a Captain in the Air Force working as a pediatrician, stationed in Salina, Kansas. Leon and Enid moved back to Brooklyn, NY, where he worked at Kings County Hospital and then Brooklyn Eye and Ear Hospital where he trained as an ophthalmologist. Leon and Enid moved to Middlebury, CT, where they raised their family. Leon established his medical practice in Waterbury, CT and later added a Stamford office, where he treated thousands of patients for eye diseases and provided leading edge techniques of cataract and corneal surgery. Dr. Zucker performed the latest types of surgeries to give the best care to his patients, and was groundbreaking when he built one of the first free standing surgery centers in Connecticut. After retirement, Leon volunteered for many years in the Court system in Hartford Connecticut. He and Enid moved later to Florida where he enjoyed fishing and boating, and this is where he lived until his death. Leon was a talented artist and accomplished woodworker, constructing many complicated model ships and detailed bird carvings. He had also created many stone sculptures and paintings.
A private memorial service will be held at their home on October 20th. A special thank you goes to the aides, Marie Brooks, Daphne Johnson, Elizabeth Stora, Sharon Japp, provided loving assistance to Leon during his illness.
