He was also preceded in death by his brother, Joseph M. Hewitt and sister, Wilma H. Coley. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rebecca Bandy Hewitt of the home.
Dick was a graduate of Newton-Conover High School. He was an Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War. Upon returning to Catawba County, he began working at Superior Cable and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. With his position at Superior Cable he was transferred to Brownwood Texas to assist in starting a cable manufacturing plant. He and his family resided in Brownwood for over 20 years. Richard retired after 32 years of service with Corning.
Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his tractor. An avid Dallas Cowboys fan, he was rarely seen without his Dallas Cowboy hat. He was active in the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce in Texas and North Carolina.
Dick was a loving husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. He treasured his time with the grandchildren whom he loved to tease.
In addition to his wife, those left to cherish his memory are sons: Tony Hewitt and wife Rhoda of Texas, Todd Hewitt of Texas and Jason Hewitt and wife Michelle of Lawndale, NC and daughter Heather Martin and husband Kenneth of Newton, NC. Grandchildren Hayden Hewitt and wife Katie of Burnet, TX; Hannah Spinks and husband Kirby of Brownwood, TX; Layton Hewitt and wife Kelsey of Vale, NC; Olivia, Abby and Kyra Martin, all of Newton, NC, Kendal and Kadence O’Neal of Lawndale; great-grandchildren, twins Cooper and Connor Hewitt and Saige Spinks. Sister-in-laws, Rita Ikerd and husband Bobby of KY and Gaye Hewitt, GA. Also numerous nieces and nephews.
I am thankful that in God’s design, He planned it so your path crossed mine as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Korean War veteran and Corning retiree.
At Dick’s request, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Condolences may be sent to the Hewitt family at www.drumfh-conover.com.
The Hewitt family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Conover, NC.
