LEXINGTON - Julia Winifred Quinn “Winnie” Vereen, age 91, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018. Born on December 13, 1926 in Sarecta, North Carolina to the late Thomas and Viola Williams Quinn. “Winnie” was loved by all and was known for her kind spirit and sense of humor.
She graduated from the James Walker School of Nursing in Wilmington, North Carolina. Winnie led a successful career at the Veteran Administration of Columbia, including Supervisor of the Operating Room, ENT, ER, and Eye Clinic, retiring in 1986. Winnie and Marvin “Carroll” Vereen, Sr. married in Columbia in April of 1953, where they raised their children, Carolyn Gayle Vereen Albertini, Linda Marie Vereen Schiesser and Marvin Carroll “Marc” Vereen, Jr.
After retirement, Winnie volunteered at the State Museum Gift Shop and stayed an active member and volunteer in her church, Northeast Presbyterian Church. She loved music, dancing and spending time with family. She was known as “GaGa” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and touched many peoples’ lives as “GaGa.” She was also known to many others as “Winnie the Pooh.”
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Northeast Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, 601 Polo Road, Columbia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church Atrium. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 7100 Garners Ferry Rd. Columbia, SC 29209. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Surviving are her daughters, Carolyn Gayle Albertini (Frank, deceased), and Linda Marie Vereen Schiesser; grandchildren, April Breeze Savage (Steve), Marc Jackson Hill, Allie Peay Bates (John), and Katelyn Brooke Schiesser; great-grandchildren, Parker Draheim, Savannah Hill, Chase Draheim, Hayden Peay, Keegan Hill, and Layla Quinn Bates; and siblings, Jimmy Quinn and Betty Quinn.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, Marvin Carroll “Marc” Vereen, Jr.
