On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, Alec Lawrence Mangaliman, a very devoted husband, a father of four lovely children, a proud grandfather of three beloved grandkids, a caring brother and brother-in-law, and uncle, passed away at age 71.
Alec was born on August 10, 1947, in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, to Frederico Mangaliman and Maria Salome Arellano. In 1968, Alec received his medical technologist degree from Centro Escolar University in Manila, where he met Estrella T. Reyna, the love of his life. On September 21, 1972, Alec and Estrella married and they enjoyed 46 years together of memories, vacations, and worked through the hardships that come with life. Together they raised four children: Lana (David), John (Vincent), Jill, and Kimberly (Matthew).
After college, Alec served in the United States Armed Forces, where he specialized in stratcom communication and was stationed at the Pentagon. In 1973, Alec was honorably discharged and returned to the Philippines, ready to begin a new chapter in his life. Alec, Estrella, and little Lana came to live in Seattle, Washington in 1975.
Alec found work all around the Seattle area: a pipe fitter for Lockheed Martin; research lab technician at the University of Washington; inspector with Washington State Department of Transportation. Alec was a lifelong learner, pursuing knowledge and finding ways to train himself. He loved going back to school and earned a variety of associate’s degrees: civil engineering technology, CAD/drafting technology, computer programing, and robotics just to name a few.
Alec had a passion for fishing and he enjoyed traveling to the various fishing spots around the Puget Sound and on the Washington coast. As a young man, he spent some time in San Mateo, California, and would always talk about how beautiful Half Moon Bay was when he was there. He loved cars and enjoyed working on them. He loved to play chess, teaching his kids how to play and later his three grandchildren, Hannah, Madison, and David. He was also a great lover of music, especially the Beatles and the Beach Boys, and kept an extensive record collection. Whenever he was asked about his time in the Armed Forces at the Pentagon, he often gave a sly smile and would say, “That’s classified.”.
Alec is survived by his wife Estrella, his four children, his two sisters, Elizabeth (Kelly) and Rose Grace (Nestor), and his extended family. A private service will be held by the family at his final resting place, Forest Lawn Funeral Home, in West Seattle.
