Thomas Edward Coyne was born on July 6, 1926 in Oak Park, Ill.. He passed away on November 27, 2018. Thomas was raised in Chicago and attended St. Mel’s High School. He met his wife, Patricia Coyne, to whom he was married for over 65 years, through Newman Hall in Berkeley, where they made many lifelong friends.
Thomas was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he received his B.A. in 1948. He received his graduate degrees in Education at the University of California at Berkeley. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
Thomas was a teacher for several school districts in the San Francisco Bay Area before he commenced a career of approximately 30 years as an elementary school principal with the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, retiring in 1985. He was active with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), where he served for several years as president of the Monterey County chapter.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Francis Coyne, Sr. and Helen Meyer Coyne; his wife, Patricia Coyne; his sister, Dorothy Coyne and his brother, Raymond Coyne, Jr.
Thomas is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Pebley (Charles) of Benicia, Maureen Ammon (Barry) of Oakland, his sons, Dennis of Monterey and James (Michelle) of Fresno. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kerri Pebley, Kristi Pebley, Ryan Coyne and Julia Coyne and by his brother, Robert Coyne, of Silver Spring, MD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on December 14,, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 9th and Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove. Burial will follow at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove.
