Steve was born to Bruce and Ellen Mathis in High Shoals, NC on July 17, 1941.
He was married to Janet T. Mathis on August 10, 1974, whom he loved and cherished for their forty-four years together.
After his high school years, Steve enlisted in the United States Army, where he was a Ranger. After serving his country, Steve chose to return close to home and serve the community as a police officer. He was honored to be a Patrol Officer for the Mecklenburg County Police Department and the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Police Department. During his years with the department, he was also a training officer, where he had a love for being a mentor. He retired after 30 years of service to the community.
Steve is survived by his ‘Chinadoll’ (wife) Jan Mathis and loving ‘Daddy’ to Wes Mathis(son), Rodney Mathis(son), Stephanie McGinnis(daughter), Sandy Mathis(daughter-in-law), Bethany Mathis(daughter-in-law), Ryan McGinnis(son-in-law) and a dear ‘Pappy’ to his grandchildren; Noah Mathis, Cole Mathis, Benji Mathis and Charlotte Mathis. Siblings - Jim Mathis, John Mathis, Marlene Mathis and David Mathis.
The family would like to thank his many friends and fellow police officers that were always there for him. A special thanks to Mark Harris for always being there by his side. And an additional heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Novant Neuro ICU for taking such great care of him in his last days.
