Anna Hoogeveen, 95, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 in Kingwood, Texas after a long, hard fought battle with Parkinson’s and after a stroke left her partially paralyzed.
She was born to Haije Hiemstra and Tietje Zwager on January 4, 1924 in Menaldum, Friesland, Netherlands. She was the fourth child of nine. She married her husband, Wietze Hoogeveen, on March 13, 1950, and they were married for almost 55 years before he passed away in 2005. They immigrated to the United States on June 2, 1950 on the SS Veendam from Rotterdam to New York, leaving behind her country of birth and all her family to make a better life after the war. The voyage took 14 days. She became a US Citizen on November 10, 1964. After arriving in the US, they traveled from Hoboken, New Jersey to Beaver Creek, Minnesota to stay with relatives. Together they lived in Minnesota, Iowa and Indiana (where they lived for over 40 years). She later moved to Texas, and lived there for 10 years.
Anna loved gardening; she loved flowers—peonies and gladiolas were her favorite to grow in their many flowerbeds. They also had a half acre garden where they grew lots of fresh vegetables. She would can and freeze them to enjoy all year long. She also loved to sew, making most of her own clothes and clothes for her children and grandchildren; she even made her daughter’s wedding dress. Most of all, however, she loved to bake. Everyone enjoyed her homemade baked goods (especially her marzipan logs, cookies, cakes, breads, and many other goodies) that she would gift to family and friends at Christmastime!
Anna and Wietze had four children: Bernie, Tietje, Hilda and Harry. Anna worked very hard at providing for her family by cleaning houses to make some extra money. She learned English by watching TV. Late in life, she even bought a computer and learned to type so she could email with her family in Holland.
Anna is survived by two sisters, Geertje Roersma of Rottevalle, Netherlands and Ytje Postma of Marum, Netherlands; her daughter Tietje (Greg German) of Edmond, Oklahoma; and her son Harry Hoogeveen of Indianapolis, Indiana. She is further survived by her grandchildren Andrea Freeman, Trevor Hoogeveen, Jamie (Josh Kilborn), Grant German (Heather Beller), Annelle (Chris Alloway), Matthew Hoogeveen (Yoaly), and Tracey (Trey Whitley), along with her daughter-in-law, Ramona Hoogeveen and Mona’s children Marc Keedy and Amanda Keedy. She is also survived by her great grandchildren: Boyce and Coleson Brown, Xavior Freeman, Parker and Anna Hoogeveen, Alyana and Aiden Hoogeveen, Maddox Alloway, Taylor Kilborn, and Cooper and Gabe Patrick along with two brother-in-laws: Piet Roersma and Libbe Hoogeveen, and four sister-in-laws: Sijke Hiemstra, Reintsje Bush, Trintsje Wines and Aaltsje Wines and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Holland.
Anna is preceded in death by her husband, Wietze; her daughter, Hilda; and her son, Bernie; along with parents, Haije & Tiet; her sisters Sjourtsje, Taekeltje, and Pietsje and brothers Yde, Feije, and Everet; her brother-in-laws Jelle Giesing, Kaas Pasma, Jelle Dykstra, Oene Kolthof, Carl Wines, Gerrit Hoogeveen, James Bush, and Leo Wines.
There will be a gravesite burial ceremony for family on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Zionsville Cemetary in Zionsville, Indiana. A celebration of life get together will follow at a location yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association.
