He obtained an Associate of Science degree from Austin Peay State University in 1986, while serving in the United States Army with the Signal Corps. He retired in 1989 after 22 years of service with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, grade 2. After military retirement, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1994 from East Tennessee State University and started a second career as a Certified Biomedical Engineering Technician. He retired in 2016 from Laughlin Memorial Hospital after 20 years.
He was an active member of Carter’s Chapel United Methodist Church where he served in various roles, including Adult Sunday School Class teacher, Lay Leader and Lay Speaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Elmer and Lucille Keller Gregg, and his brother, Donnie Roger Gregg.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Janet Dowell Moffitt of Telford and Jeanne and Henry Jackson of Huntsville, Alabama; two grandchildren: Wesley Dowell of Telford and Julia Moffitt of Telford; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Betty Reynolds and Heidi and Phillip McCurry; three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Lowell and Shirley Gregg, Gene Gregg, and Hovie and Deborah Gregg, all of Greeneville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and two aunts: Glenna Cutshall and Viola Keller.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm on Thursday and on Friday 12 – 2 pm at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be at 2 pm Friday in the Chapel of Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Wills officiating.
Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. The Greene County Honor Guard and the Tennessee National Guard will conduct a military graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Dowell, Henry Jackson, Tracy Gregg, Timothy Reynolds, Gregg McCurry and Phillip McCurry.
Honorary pallbearers are his former co-workers in the Biomedical Department of Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
The family expressed a special thanks to Dr. Steven Prince, the ICU nursing staff, the Respiratory Department, and the Tennessee Cancer Specialists staff.
