Born in Bud, WV Feb 3, 1942, she was the only daughter of Velmer and Delma McKinney (both deceased) of Mullens, WV. She married Kenneth Duke James (deceased) of Crab Orchard, WV in 1964. She is survived by her brother, Vernon Hurt, of Rowlett, Texas. She is also survived by her son, Kenneth Duke James, Jr., her daughter-in-law, Stacey Sue James, and her grandchildren, Joshua Haddon James and Anna Elizabeth James, all of Mebane, NC.
Carol Sue graduated valedictorian from Mullens High School in 1959, received her bachelor's degree from WVU in 1963, and later received a master's degree from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. A career school teacher, she taught in Virginia Beach, VA and in Mullens, WV. She primarily taught math, having many students receive awards in state competitions. She also led activities such as gymnastics, field hockey, tennis, and chess. She moved from Mullens to Mebane in 2010 to be near her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, much to their delight.
Carol Sue's life was characterized by her amazing devotion to family and her sacrificial giving of herself and of gifts. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and would often sing praises to Him in her home until COPD limited her ability to do this. She loved Christmas, making over a dozen different kinds of cookies and treats because family had different favorites.
The funeral/memorial service will be held in the mausoleum at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV at 1:00 Saturday, May 18, 2019. Instead of flowers, people are asked to send a donation in her honor to Bradford Academy, 939 S Third Street, Mebane, NC 27302.
