Services for Elmer Tate (Bill) Baker, 94, of Lufkin, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Victory Assembly of God, with Pastor Mike Fowler officiating. He will be interred in the Jackson City Cemetery in Jackson, Georgia at a later date.
Mr. Baker was born April 12, 1925 in Atkins, Arkansas, the son of the late Eva (Shelby) and Will E. Baker. He passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 in a local nursing facility.
Mr. Baker was retired from Dow Chemical Company in Freeport. He was a long-time resident of Jackson, Georgia and resided in Diboll since 2006. His hobbies included wood-working and golf. Mr. Baker was a proud veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the Aleutian Islands on a mine sweeper as a signalman. Mr. Baker was a faithful member of Victory Assembly of God.
Survivors include his wife, Janell Baker of Diboll; daughters, Glenna Francis of Clear Lake, Jenny Sheffield of Van Buren, Arkansas and Judy Pike and husband Keith of Dallas; son, Garland Baker and wife Helen of Diboll; brother, Glen Winters and wife Eula May of Plant City; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 50 years, Iris Faye Baker; brothers, Leroy Baker and Charlie Winters; sister, Lois Winters; and son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Margie Jernigan.
Pallbearers will be Layne Wyatt, Kyle Rushing, Jason Reimer, Bodavid Williford, Baylon Williford and Blaze Williford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Baker’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army of Lufkin, 412 S. Third Street, Lufkin, TX 75901.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
