Waymon Earl Fountain, known as and named “Bpop” by his oldest grandson Harrison, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, June 22, 2019. Waymon had been diagnosed with inoperable prostate cancer the summer of 2014, and through the power of prayer, he outlasted the 12-16month average life -expectancy by baffling doctors and remaining healthily active in the midst of the storm for five years. He was seventy-two years old, extremely loved by many, and surrounded by them in his own home when he passed away.
Born on January 13, 1947 in Nacogdoches, TX to John Joseph Fountain and Lena Mae Bittick, Waymon went to school at Aldine ISD and worked diligently with his daddy at their gas station in Aldine. On October 25, 1968, He joined the US Army. He was stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana, Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, Fort Riley in Kansas, and he was stationed in Germany and Austria during the Vietnam War. In addition, He was also an honor guard for President Nixon. He received a Certificate of Appreciation for Faithful Performance of Duty, a National Service Defense Medal, and he was honorably discharged on October 1, 1974. On February 18, 1972, Waymon married Cynthia Clay Hollan two hours before riders left town on The Old Spanish Trail Ride headed for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Together, they raised two phenomenal sons and remained married for 47years.
Waymon was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Fountain and Lena Mae Bittick and his sister Johnnie Murle. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Fountain, his sisters Betty Warren, and Debbie Luna and husband Glenn; his sons John Clay Fountain and wife Brooke, and Will Davis Fountain and wife Hannah; His grandchildren John Harrison, Caymen Lane, and Berkley Grace Fountain; and Clay Davis, Pryce Jesse, Faith Ivy, and Joy Lena Mae Fountain; his nieces Melissa Murphy and husband Greg, and Lisa Burt and husband Jay; and his nephew Dean Warren and wife Bernice along with multiple generations of family and dearly beloved friends.
Waymon’s steadfast faithfulness, servant’s heart, and diligent work ethic filled his years of employment with Houston ISD Maintenance, Trinity Construction Company, William Brother’s Construction Company, Montgomery County Precinct 1, and Victory Motor Company. Also a tremendous asset and a vessel of joy, Waymon influenced many lives and impacted the Montgomery County Fair Association for years as he dedicated his time there being a life member and serving on the Board of Directors. Furthermore, he served as a life member for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. In his earlier years, he roped with Norman “Butch” Roberts along with others in the Circle 8 Rodeos in Aldine, TX. In his later years he roped as a member of the Senior Pro Rodeo Association with his son John coaching him all the way. He was also able to “fix” just about anything by taking it apart and just staring at it for a while. He even could make horse walkers out of old car parts. Welding was one of his favorite things to do along with always helping others by seeing areas of need that he could pour his abilities and heart out, in order to fill others up.
“Bpop” will forever be remembered for his service to the Lord above all and his support in pioneering the way for many rodeo ministries, horse racing ministries, and cowboy church ministries including: the MCFA church services, Lone Star Cowboy Church, and Kingdom Ranch Church. He has left us a legacy of optimism, sincerity, tenacity, humor, unending demonstrations of love through action, and ability to put wisdom in such simple terms. He had to have his Dr. Peppers and Copenhagen through the years, but when he needed to quit them, he did! As simple as that! When asked how, he said, “I just told myself I didn’t need it anymore!” From always having his sons or grandkids or, frankly, anyone’s kids on his lap while driving down the dirt roads of East Texas to keeping the babies with him while operating tractors and other equipment, Bpop could handle any task if a child was involved! He was the world’s best at getting the grandchildren to sleep with the “butt-pat” even if it took an hour or longer!
Other memories include his love for dancing with his wife, his cologne mixture of Brut and Old Spice, dressing up as Santa Clause, and sneaking kids into rodeos by putting them in the tack compartment of the trailer! He forever will be remembered, and the memories we have will keep “Bpop” in our hearts and lives until we see him again one day.
