August 19 1938 – July 6, 2019
“Charlie” born August 19, 1938 in Omeemee, Ontario lost his brief battle with cancer July 6, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta. We all celebrated Dad’s 80th birthday last year with family and friends in Castlegar, British Columbia.
Dad is survived by his sons, Daniel (Vicki) Downey, Jason (Wendy) Downey, Lee (Megan) Downey, daughter Karen (Rodger) Woodhouse; grandchildren, Luke, Mollie, Kara, Cale, Liam, Grace, Claire, Leanne and Kalan; great grandchildren, Elijah and Torin; sisters, Patricia (Marty) Baro, Rosemary (Dave) Powell, Kit (Bob) Schram, Carol (Ian) MacIntosh as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Carol of 58 years in 2017, son Eugene Downey in 1983, his sister Anne (Dom) Fox, his brother James (Lynda) Downey, and parents Eugene and Rose Downey.
Dad left the family farm in Downeyville, Ontario and came to Alberta at the age of 17 to work at the wheat exchange. Dad met and married Carol in 1958 in Rossland, British Columbia. He obtained his Sheet Metal trade in 1964 and opened his own business, Downey Heating, in 1973. Dad passed his trade onto his three sons; Dan, Dowcom Sheet Metal, in Ontario, Jason, Calgary Tinsmith, and Lee, Calgary Precision Metal.
Mom and Dad bought their cabin in Invermere, BC in 1977, where we all enjoyed many summer and ski seasons together. He was a long-time member of Corpus Christi Parish and was a fourth degree with the Knights of Columbus. Dad will be remembered for his generosity to many charities and he and Mom always had an open door to family and friends in need.
Thank you to Dr. Chary, Dr. Sharma and the caring staff at Dulcina Hospice for their support.
