Dorothy Kirby Batson Casteen, 95, died August 28, 2019. She was born on March 27, 1924. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 70 years, E.J. She is survived by her children Jeanne (Giles), Jim (Janet), Phyllis (Farhad), Meg (Kent) and Matt, 7 grandchildren (4 grandchildren-in-law) and 9 great grandchildren.
Born to Thomas and Grace Kirby Batson in Wilmington, NC, Dorothy (Dottie) was the oldest of four children. She graduated from New Hanover High School. While working at Atlantic Coastline Railroad in Wilmington, Dottie met E. J. and they were married on August 31, 1946. After 2 children and a new job opportunity for E.J., they moved to Gastonia, NC where E.J. began traveling weekly. From that point on, with her forward-thinking ability, Dottie embraced the challenge of her new self-reliance in raising her children and managing her home with grace and creativity. After 2 more children and another new job opportunity for E.J., they moved to Raleigh in 1965 where the last of their 5 children was born. They were faithful, long time members of New Hope Baptist church. For many years she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She continued creating a warm, inviting home with delicious and nutritious food as well as beautiful gardens. A testament to her talent and skill in homemaking is that her children continue to enjoy each other and returning to the home she created. She remained always committed and in love with E.J., her spouse of 70 years. She was a wonderful mother, wife and trustworthy friend and will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends starting at 9:30am Monday, Sept. 2 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Rd. with a service at 10am. Burial will be at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
