Born April 30, 1922, in Union County, North Carolina, Mary was the daughter of the late William and Maude Squires. She formerly worked with S.H. Kress and retired from K-Mart on Independence Boulevard. Mary later worked as an aid with Presbyterian Hospital Cancer Center. A devout Christian, she was a lifelong member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, where she taught the Beginner Sunday School Class for over 70 years and was a member of the Good Timers. She was also a member of the Sunny Citizens of Mint Hill.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Plowman; a son, William Plowman; and a grandson, William Clayton “Willie” Plowman.
Surviving are her sons, James Plowman and wife, Helen, and Jerry Plowman and wife, Donna, all of Matthews; daughter-in-law, Mary L. Plowman of Florence, South Carolina; grandchildren, Denise Fowler, Kristal Blythe, John Plowman and Sharon Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Steven Blythe, Luke Blythe, Ritchie Hughes and Shannon Dockery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Saturday, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, September 8, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church with The Rev. Dr. Buddy Pigg, Mr. Ernie Lambert and The Rev. Bruce Pope officiating. Interment will follow in Ritch Cemetery in Hemby Bridge.
