He is survived by his children, Richard, Monica (Paul Loye), Paul (Susan Murphy) and Clare (James Young); his grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Luke, Benjamin and Hannah; nephew, Tom, and nieces, Sandra and Judy.
Don was a man for whom family was everything. His life revolved entirely around his wife and children. He was just a great Dad! Don also reserved a special place in his heart and attention for his grandchildren, who affectionately looked to him as "Grampy". He handed on to us the Catholic faith, the centre of his own life, and also left us as a legacy what it means to be a decent man and true gentleman. An employee of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the length of his career, Don was also actively involved for many years in St. Michael's Parish of Halifax, the Knights of Columbus, and the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. These associations afforded Don the opportunity to make many good friends, with whom he was always glad to stay in touch.
Don's children are particularly grateful to the administration and staff of Melville Gardens, which served as his home for the past year. We are especially thankful to everyone on 4th floor; their care of our father and attention to his every need was exceptional.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, where visitation will take place Tuesday, October 1st, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 2nd at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church in Halifax, presided by Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton. Mass will be followed by a reception in the parish hall, and private burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation in Don's memory may direct their gifts to Hope Cottage in Halifax or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
