Sophie (Sally) Cora Martorano of Toms River died peacefully at her home on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the age of 93. Born in Jersey City to the late Camillo and Rachel Camillo, and sister to William Camillo, she moved to Toms River 29 years ago.
After graduating from Ferris high school in Jersey City, where she wrote the Ferris high school graduation song, she worked for Macy’s Department store in New York City. Her father Camillo worked as a shoemaker at the neighboring Lord & Taylor Department Store. Before retiring to Toms River with her husband Sam, she worked for First Fidelity Bank in Nutley New Jersey. During her retirement she cared for her mother Rachel who lived in Toms River with her and Sam until her passing in 2004 at the age of 99.
Her catholic faith and love of family was a testament to her Italian heritage. Sophie was an amazing cook and delighted in preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays. Throughout her life she cherished taking pictures of places she had been to and especially of her family and friends. These photos gave her great keepsakes of what was most important in her life. She was an avid animal lover, had a tremendous love for music and was an active member of the Holiday City chorus. During her years in Toms River she always enjoyed bowling, playing bocce and attending weekly games of mahjong with friends. She had a charismatic personality that nicely complimented Sam’s casual demeanor. She was greatly loved and will be missed.
Sophie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Salvatore J Martorano and her brother William Camillo. Surviving are her loving daughter Patricia and her husband Patrick Cleary of South River, sons Joseph Martorano and girlfriend Meri Pace of Lyndhurst and James Martorano and wife Karen of Readington Township and their two sons, Sophie’s grandchildren, Adam and Brian and her dear sister-in-law Ann Camillo of Delray Beach Florida and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
