James Nichols Ramsbottom (Jim), 66, passed away peacefully at his home in Austin, Texas on January 4th, 2020. His memorial service will be held Saturday, January 11th at 2:00pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Lakeway.
Jim was born on December 5, 1953 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to Louise “PZ” Strayhorn and Dr. John Garnett Ramsbottom. Growing up in Spartanburg, he was a high school football star and during the summer months, he helped run the family’s motel in Myrtle Beach, SC. He went on to gain a Business degree from the University of South Carolina in 1971 and had a successful career in technology sales, working at Cisco, Dell, and AT&T.
He married Patrice Bourne in 1984 and raised one daughter, Berkeley.
The family moved to Austin, Texas in 2000 and Jim truly found his home. He was heavily involved in Riverbend Church, the local Alcoholics Anonymous community, and the Travis Heights Outreach Ministry supporting the Austin homeless. He devoted his life to helping others - giving alcoholics and addicts hope and strength to set their lives on the right path.
He loved music… His daughter remembers one of his favorite pastimes was blasting Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” on any stereo he could find. He also loved the water, from surfing and teaching his daughter to boogie board in Myrtle Beach, to cruising around Lake Travis on his boat. Golf was another one of his favorite hobbies and in recent years, he took a part-time job working at local courses and played at least 3 times per week. We’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention Jim’s love for dogs and animals -- devoted father to countless Collies, Schnauzers, Dachshunds, and Yorkies over the years.
He was one of the kindest, and also silliest people you will ever meet. He loved to joke around and brightened the day of anybody he interacted with. One of his best qualities was always making everybody feel included and loved. He truly loved life and would want the rest of us to continue always having fun in his honor.
Jim is survived by his wife, Patrice, daughter and son-in-law Berkeley & Garrett Cox, brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Garnett & Gail Ramsbottom, sister- and brother-in-law Lynette & Edwin Miller, and other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given in his name to the Travis Heights Outreach Ministry of which he was heavily involved with. The family thanks everybody for their love and support.
