It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anne Barbara Spencer, 102, on Tuesday, January 7th,2020. Anne passed away peacefully at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour with family by her side. Born on April 25th, 1917 in Halifax,NS …Anne was the daughter of the late George W. and Grace Muriel (Hubley) Veinotte. Although Anne was actually born with the name Annie, she changed it over time to Anne and would always make sure people got it right by saying… my name is Anne spelled with an “e”.
Anne was initially a work-at-home mom before taking on employment with Mahon’s Stationery located on Spring Garden Rd., Halifax where she worked for many years. She later accepted a position in the payroll department with the Halifax School Board Commission where she eventually retired.
Anne was married to Thomas Edward Currie until his passing in 1978. Anne remarried several years later to Freeman Tattrie who also pre-deceased her and in time married Edgar (Ed) Spencer on April 7th, 2007. Edgar passed away in March, 2015. Anne lived out her later independent years in Cameron Hall, Clayton Park, Halifax until October, 2019 when she was hospitalized at that time. She will miss her Pub nights, Bingoramas, evening dinner with friends and all the special events in which she participated at Cameron Hall.
Anne had four sons: Thomas (Tom) S. (Linda), Guelph,Ont – Tom pre-deceased Anne on May 16th, 2005; Joseph (Joe) E. (Joan) - Lunenburg,NS; John D. (Carolyn) – Middleton,NS and Peter W. (Pauline) – Bedford,NS. Anne was also the proud grandmother of 9 grand children; 13 great grand children; and, 4 great, great grand children whom she loved dearly. Anne’s family meant everything to her.
Anne was a lover of sports of all types…..hockey, baseball, curling, figure skating. She thoroughly enjoyed attending family sports events and later enjoyed watching them on TV. In her early retired years Anne was a proud senior of Saint Mary’s Lawn Bowling Club and later the Wanders Lawn Bowling Club. She was actually on several provincial teams and on occasion would come home with a trophy in hand. She also loved alley bowling as well.
Anne was predeceased by brothers George, Jack, Frank and Spencer as well as sisters Grace and Helen.
Not many realize Anne was one of the last remaining survivors of the Halifax Explosion which took place in Halifax Harbour in December, 1917.
Anne was a member of St. Agnes Church for many years. She participated in many church events and was most proud to tell folks “her” baked goods would never make it to the bake table.
Anne was a feisty individual who would never back down from a debate and made sure her point of view was heard. The one thing about Anne was once you were her friend…you were her friend for life.
She loved family gatherings and would make up any reason to have a get-together. Our Mom was a loving, caring, generous and kind person. Her kindness, generosity and love let us know without having to say anything that we belonged and the family memories she made with us will remain forever in our hearts.
Anne’s life was truly a remarkable ride and will always leave a special place in our hearts. Our mom’s life has been a memorable positive experience and her thoughts, words and advice will remain with us always. She has truly left her mark.
Mom,….we will forever miss you. And, above all…..WE LOVE YOU.
A Special Thanks: Our family would like to thank the entire staff at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musqudoboit Harbour who went above and beyond with their help for our Mom. Our Mom had been a patient there since Oct. 5th, 2019 until her passing and the entire nursing staff treated our Mom with the utmost dignity, compassion and professionalism. We cannot speak highly enough for your help through a very tough time.
As per our Mom’s request she has been cremated and we will have a family burial later in the Spring.
