Margaret Joy Dockray (nee Cunningham) known to her friends and family as Joy, passed away on January 28th at Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center having just celebrated her 95th birthday. A year round resident of South Wellfleet since the early 1980’s, Joy was born in Western Australia and moved to New Jersey shortly after World War II to marry her former husband, Joseph Dockray. When in recent years people noted her Aussie accent, they often asked where she was from to which she would respond ‘Cape Cod’ which she very much considered her home. Music was a passion: she played the organ, piano and piano accordion and sang in various choruses, including New Jersey’s distinguished Pro Arte Chorale and the Provincetown Chorale. In earlier years, she volunteered at the Highlands House Museum in North Truro and served as a guide at the Wellfleet Audubon Society—in her last weeks she even made sure bird seed was put out in the feeders along her deck. She enjoyed dining out, particularly at VR’s (which she called Pete’s) and the Thursday lunches at the Wellfleet Senior Center.
Joy is survived by her daughter, Wendy Dockray (husband Robert Trobe) of Guilford Connecticut, her sons Edward Dockray and Joseph Dockray, both of Norwich New York, her grandchildren whom she adored: Heather Trobe of Brooklyn New York, Tanya Cameron (husband Doug) of Falmouth, Joey Dockray of Dennis, Dan Dockray (wife Sarah) of Telluride Colorado and Jon Dockray (wife Jena) also of Norwich New York. She was fortunate to have four great grandchildren whom she cherished: Temprance, Trenton, Carter and Hailey, plus numerous nieces and nephews both in the United States and in Western Australia.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, February 3rd from 4pm-7pm at Nickerson Funeral Home 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday February 4th at 10am in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the South Wellfleet Cemetery.
