Roxie Margaret was born in Queens, New York on July 9, 1929 to Randolph Buford and Grace (Bryan) Meredith. The family moved to Houston when Roxie was about a year old. Even as a young child, whatever she decided it was she wanted to do... she gave it 100%. Like learning to play the piano...
She always had a love for music, skating and swimming, and even spent time on horseback, where she competed in Barrel Racing at the Brazoria County Fair.
She attended Lamar High School in Houston but completed her high school years at Brazosport High School in Freeport, from where she graduated in 1948. After graduation, she performed synchronized swimming and diving in shows at the legendary Houston Shamrock hotel. She was a favorite of this hotel’s founder, Glynn McCarthy, who was the legendary Texas Oilman that inspired the character of Jett Rink in the movie “Giant”.
Full of charm and grace, she later modeled for Marshall Fields, Neiman Marcus, and Houston’s downtown Foley Brothers. Her adventuresome spirit and love of skating later led her to a brief stent with the Ice Capades in San Francisco, CA. in the early 1950s. She posed in newspaper ads, performed in a commercial for Ideal Bread and was given the opportunity to interview many of the top visitors who attended the opening of the Astrodome.
In the early part of the 1960’s, she was back in Houston pursuing her love of music. As a gifted piano player and vocalist, she turned professional and entertained in Houston's legendary Top of The Mark Club, The Cork Club, The Continental Club and others. She often performed the "dueling pianos” show with Houston's own legendary jazz pianist, Seger Ellis.
In the 1970s her talents shifted to another creative mode as she worked with Designing Women Interior. Designing professional offices and restaurants were her most loved challenges but she also enjoyed designing homes, as well. She traveled to many areas of the world always bringing home treasures, which are still on display throughout her home.
There are many more threads that can be woven into the story of Roxie's life, each one adding detail to the special person she was. Those that knew her have memories to treasure and stories to tell. She adored her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Melissa Greer; her parents, R. B. and Grace Meredith. She is survived by her son, William Bryan Hoskins (Delia); grandson, B. J. Hoskins; her sister, Marsha Bluestein (Ed), along with their children, Leslie Williams (Frank) and Boyd Bluestein (Pam), and her loving friend and companion, Eddy Rayburn.
Roxie requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the SPCA of Brazoria County, 141 Canna Lane, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566 or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
