It is with a heavy heart that the family of Augusto Lim Sy who was also known by his Chinese name “Sy Chu Kok”, announces his sudden passing, on February 13, 2020, at the age of 76. Augusto will be forever remembered by his wife, Virginia, his two sons, Albert (Lilybeth), Patrick (Kathleen), his grandchildren Rigel, Jadon, Skyla, Izaac and Raelyn, his surviving brothers and sisters Sy Le Na, Sy Chu Eng, Sy Chu Tek, Sy Chu Guan, Sy Le Hua, and Sy Le Tin, close friends, and his vast extended family.
Born in Iligan City, Mindanao, Philippines to Sy Tiong An and Lim Kee Siu in 1943, he lived his early life as a boy collecting stamps and coins from around the world, fishing, playing billiards and reading books. He attended Lanao Chung Hua School (Class of 1962) for his primary and high school years and was quoted by the family to be always serious about his studies.
Augusto went on to live a life filled with accolades. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Pre-medicine at the Cebu Institute of Technology and his doctorate in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. He immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s to complete multiple fellowships and residency programs, one most notably at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
During the time he spent pursuing his medical career in the United States, he also joined and served as a doctor in the Army reserves from 1983 to 1993. He achieved the officer rank of Major in the United States Army. He worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, California State Prison Solano in Vacaville, California, and multiple private practice clinics throughout Northern California.
Augusto cherished the time he spent with his friends and family, often spending hours with them in deep conversation about politics and current events, constantly sending obscure but appreciated articles over social media, eating out at restaurants, traveling the world with his wife Virginia, being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Augusto Sy lived a full life and will be dearly missed.
