Sheila Oliver Coupland, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Gilbert, Arizona on Friday, July 10, at the age of 83. She was born in Lanett, Alabama on September 18, 1936, and graduated from Lanett High School in 1954. Sheila graduated from Auburn University in 1957 with High Honors and was awarded membership into Phi Kappa Phi honorary society her senior year. Additionally, she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies. She received an M.S. degree from Samford University in 1970. She is preceded in death by her mother, Sally Tittle Oliver, her father, James David (J.D.) Oliver, her husband, Bobby Emmet Coupland, and her son, Robert Coston Coupland. Sheila and Bob were happily married for 58 years. Sheila is survived by her daughter, Janet Coupland McClendon (Greg), grandson, Daniel Simms Newell (engaged to Sarina Bonnet), grandson, Davis Coupland Newell, and a brother, J. David Oliver, Jr. (Connie). Sheila taught for several years in local Birmingham schools, was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She was an avid reader, enjoyed writing and loved researching her family genealogy. She was a member of the Montevallo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of First Christian Church of Valleydale. A graveside memorial service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on August 9, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
