Martha was born in Portland Maine on March 11, 1940 to Herbert Lewis Nickels Jr. and Marion Lois Nickels. She graduated from Portland High School and pursued an Associates degree in art. While attending college she met her husband and moved to New Jersey to raise 2 children, Vicky and Jenny.
During her years in New Jersey she was a homemaker who liked to sew, crochet, draw, garden and write. She became co-head and then head of the PTA in Fort Lee for several years, and taught Sunday school as well at the First Reformed Church of the Palisades. She also spent a few years working as a secretary. After 25 years of marriage she divorced and several years later moved bakc to Maine,
She helped her younger daughter Jenny raise her two sons, Jesse Dziedzic and Jade Bucha. Martha contracted guillain-barré syndrome in 1999 and recovered and lived with them until her unexpected and sudden death.
She was always quick with a kind word and listening ear. Her faith in God sustained her and her family.
A devoted mother and grandmother she leaves behind 2 brothers:Charles Nickels and his wife Sylvia of Portland Maine, Herbert Nickels III and his wife Arlene of St. Louis, Missouri, 2 daughters: Victoria McGillicuddy and her husband Earl and their 3 children and spouses Sarah and Kyle Killip, Luke and Jacquie McGillicuddy and their son John (Martha's great grandson!) Mark and Maddy McGillicuddy and Jennifer and Bruce Sellers and their sons Jesse and Jade.
