She was preceded in death by her father, Herschel Everett Franks and her beloved mother, Thelma Franks; uncles, A.B. Cowan, Curtis Cowan, Chester Powell, Vernon Powell, Maxie Powell, and Homer Powell. Herky is survived by her sister, Zelda Vaughn and husband Rev. J. Edward Vaughn; her aunts, Monte Doolittle and Eloise Powell; cousins, Don Cowan Grant, Sherry McDuff, Jackie Ondrusek, Wilber Bosarge, Rev. C.E. Bosarge, Jeanette Ledet, Donna Wilkerson, Ellen Siler, and other relatives.
When Herky was 9 years old, the family moved to Galena Park, TX. Herky attended elementary school, junior high school, and high school at Galena Park. She joined the band in junior high school and continued in the high school band at Galena Park playing the French horn.
When the Washburn Tunnel opened in 1950, the Pasadena High School band started on the Pasadena side and the Galena Park High School band started on the Galena Park side and they marched through the tunnel meeting in the middle. Herky marched with the Galena Park band.
After graduating from high school, Herky worked as the pastor's secretary at Denver Assembly of God Church. After that job, she worked at various other places including an electrical supply company, an office supply company, and Chamber of Commerce. Herky was a graduate of Bible College held at First Assembly of God in Pasadena, TX. She worked as assistant to Sr Virginia at Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church for over 20 years. While she worked there, she was director of the ukulele band called the Sugar Sticks and continued to lead them after her retirement on a volunteer basis. They performed at various places in the Houston area for many years.
Herky loved to sing and play the piano and organ. She was the organist at Ralston Memorial Presbyterian Church for twenty-five years. She also played the piano and organ at Denver Assembly of God Church, Centerwood Assembly of God Church, Calvary Tabernacle, and Elim Church.
She was a poet: She wrote poems for every occasion and was published in several poetry books. She also had written a collection songs.
