Ken Shaffer was born in Birmingham, Al on Tuesday, April 21, 1936 and passed away to be with his family in heaven on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. Ken served his country for 20 years in the U S Air Force, enlisting in 1954 and retiring in August 1974, which included one tour in Vietnam from April 1971 to April 1972, where he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal. In his second career, he graduated from Bessemer Technical College with a degree in Refrigeration Systems Repair and worked for 22 years at Lloyd Noland Hospital, retiring in 1998. He was blessed to have been able to enjoy 22 years of retirement and is loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Leonard & Derrel Shaffer & his brother Allen Shaffer. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Jill Humphries Shaffer, Sons: Derrel Shaffer (Susie), Dale Shaffer (Laurie) Grandchildren: Aaron Shaffer (Laura), Elizabeth Shaffer, Jason Shaffer, Conner Shaffer, Brandon Cole, Melanie Fox Santiage (Carlos) & Garrett Fox (Estefania), Great Grandchildren: Jake Shaffer, Will Shaffer & Issac Shaffer, Other relatives: Mike & Mair Humphries, Sarah Humphries, Haley Tolbert, Hannah Tolbert & McKenzie Hancock
Graveside services will be held at Sunrise Memorial Gardens on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
