John Anastasiou passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the age of 85. John was preceded by his parents Christos and Helen Anastasiou, his twin-sister Irene, and his brother-in-law Jerry. John was born in Astoria, New York on October 15, 1934, and grew up in the Inwood neighborhood of New York City. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, son Christopher, daughter-in-law Wendy, granddaughters Ellie and Sophia, and sister-in-law Marylin Vallis. He is also survived by his niece Christina Miller, her husband Doug, and their children Ryan, Nick, and Anna, his niece Athena Scheina and her husband Dave, and cousin Olga Pappas.
John graduated from the State University of New York at Delhi where he earned his degree in applied science in agriculture. After graduating from college, John served his country as a quartermaster in the United States Army National Guard. In his youth, John spent his summers in the country and his love of the outdoors continued into his adult years leading him to a career as an ironworker. John moved his family to Tampa, Florida in the early 70s where he spent over 30 years before moving to Brooksville, Florida. He was an active member at both St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Tampa, and upon moving to Brooksville, St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Port Richey. John loved everything Greek including the music, food, and culture.
John was an avid football and hockey fan. He was a charter season ticket holder with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and later a season ticket holder with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Services will be held at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 2418 W. Swann Avenue, Tampa, FL 33609 on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 12 noon.
