Mr. Hiep Pham was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and Vietnamese naval officer. He passed away unexpectedly on September 27th, 2020, just one-month shy of his 69th birthday.
Hiep is survived by his wife Mai, daughter Cynthia (Carl), son Nhan, and grandson James Reiner, as well as his two brothers, Pham Huu Nghia and Pham Chi Hoa, and three sisters, Pham Thi Mui, Pham Thi Nga, and Pham Thanh Binh. He was preceded in death by his mother in 2019 at the age of 98 years.
Hiep was born and raised in Tien Giang province, Go Cong district, South Vietnam on November 16th, 1951 to Mr. Pham Van Suu and Mrs. Huynh Thi Dat. Hiep grew up in a time of great conflict and uncertainty in Vietnam. After he finished his schooling, Hiep enlisted in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He attained the rank of captain in the HQ200 unit out of Rach Gia province. After his unit moved to Phu Quoc Island, Hiep was deployed into combat for years, consistently placing the lives of his men before his own. In 1975, just before the end of the Vietnam War, Hiep left and crossed the Pacific Ocean to California. Upon arriving in a foreign land, Hiep realized his heart was with his beloved homeland, aging parents, and loving siblings, so he left and returned to Vietnam. As Hiep voyaged back to his family, the war was coming to a close.
His final voyage in the navy was back home to Saigon. Roughly six months after his return, Saigon fell to the Viet Cong, ending the Vietnam War. The communist victory spelled the end of Hiep’s military career and life as a free man. Because of his heroic actions in the South Vietnamese fight against socialism, Hiep was forced to endure eight brutal years as a prisoner of the Viet Cong. During his imprisonment, Hiep lived in extreme misery, hunger, thirst, lack of shelter, and was not allowed to communicate with his loved ones. While performing hard labor, Hiep suffered a major head injury from a falling log. Despite this life-threatening injury, he overcame his fate, persevered, and survived. After he was released from prison, Hiep reunited with his family and later met the love of his life, Mai, and they were soon married. His daughter, Cynthia, née Giang, was born in 1983 and his son, Nhan, followed in 1990.
After the birth of his son, Hiep and family immigrated to the United States to escape the communist regime in Vietnam. They settled in Noblesville, Indiana for less than three years, then moved to Seattle, Washington to be nearer to relatives. It was not easy for Hiep and his family to get settled, but Hiep was determined to give his family a better life, working multiple jobs to put food on the table. Hiep spent the rest of his life in Seattle, raising his two children, and working until his retirement in 2018. It was also this same year that he welcomed the birth of his grandson.
Hiep was a man of his word and possessed great integrity and compassion. He was a problem solver, thinker, avid do-it-yourselfer, and jack of all trades. For Hiep, there was no task too big or too small. Once he was committed to a project or helping others, he was driven to finish it, even if it meant staying up all night. He loved trying out new tools and electronic devices. Hiep loved spending time with family, listening to music, gardening with his wife, and home doing improvement projects. He had always wanted grandchildren, so his greatest joy in life was the welcoming of his grandson, James. In Hiep’s own words, James was his “golden nugget,” his joy. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all that had the pleasure of meeting him.
A funeral service will be scheduled from 12pm – 3:30pm on Sunday, October 11th, 2020 at Acacia Memorial Park & Funeral Home on 14951 Bothell Way NE, Seattle, WA 98155. In lieu of flowers and donations, the family asks that donations be sent to the Puget Sound division of the American Heart Association (https://www2.heart.org/site/SPageNavigator/donatenow_heart.html?utm_source=PugetSound) in honor of Hiep Van Pham.
