Graveside Services with military honors will be held 1:00 Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Mr. Bateman was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Leslie and Beulah Barkley Bateman and raised in Garden City, Michigan.
Richard served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. While stationed in Thailand, with top security clearance, he engineered and built the wash racks that cleaned the planes after their missions over Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Sergeant.
He worked construction in Columbia, helping remodel numerous hotels. Richard was also in charge of pouring concrete for the ramp and garage at Carolina Walk and later on, installing doors and hardware.
In 1970, he met and married Carol Green, they have been married for 48 years. In addition to his wife, his sister-in-law; Cindy B. Nichols and her husband Staten; a nephew; Richard K. Baker and wife Melanie, great nephews and nieces and a great-grandniece survive him.
