Lawrence Edward Harshman Jr.

Lawrence (Larry) Edward Harshman Jr., age 66, of Universal City, Texas peacefully arrived at his heavenly home on Monday, November 2, 2020. Lawrence was born May 18, 1954, in Alexandria, Louisiana to the late Lawrence Sr & Dottie Harshman. Larry was raised with one brother, Mark Harshman. He and his brother experienced typical sibling rivalries, but they shared many life experiences over the years. Promptly after graduating from Samuel Clemens High School in 1972, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force. 

Larry was blessed with a large and loving family. He married his best friend, Sandra Grace on September 1, 1979, on Randolph Air Force Base in Universal City, Texas.  He was blessed with six children; three daughters, Lisa, Christi, and Kelli, and three sons; Lawrence III, Bryan, and Kevin. Larry worked hard to be a good father to his children and he did his best to fulfill their needs. 

Larry was a proud Air Force veteran with 22 years of service. His family followed him to Las Vegas, Nevada; Okinawa, Japan; and Crestview, Florida during his tenure. He spent the majority of his career as an Aircraft Maintenance Craftsman working on F-15 jet engines and had a short stint serving as a Correctional Custody Supervisor. Larry was in the Air Force during the end of the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War.  Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and received several awards recognizing him for his sacrifice.  His fellow soldiers viewed him as a brother in arms and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home.

When Larry’s retirement finally arrived in 1994, he was well prepared with various hobbies to keep him busy with his newfound leisurely time. His pursuits included Dallas Cowboys football, cars, music, doing projects around the house, attending church, traveling, supporting the military and first responders, and spending time with family and friends. He was content to enjoy his favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.

Larry’s faith was very important to him and he was a proud member of Community Bible Church in San Antonio, Texas. Larry was a lover of dogs and cherished his pets. One of his favorites was Lucy, a Maltipoo.  They were best friends for 13 years.  His family was also rounded out by his late dogs, Roy and Kenny, and his current dogs Luke, Chase, Joey.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sandra; his 6 children Christi (and husband Kelly) Bryan, Kevin (and wife Lorena), Kelli (and husband Todd), Lawrence III, Lisa; his brother, Mark Harshman (and wife Gail); 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his grandsons, Peyton Abbott & Christopher Belgard. 

Simply stated, Larry was a good and kind person, an individual who will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and laid back personality. Larry leaves behind a legacy that is etched into the minds of those who knew him. We ask that you help his family maintain his legacy by continuing to speak his name and celebrate his life. Your memories of him will live on within you and in the hearts of those you share them with. 

A graveside service with military honors and a final salute will be held Wednesday, November 18, 2020, from 11:15 AM to 11:45 AM at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1525 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209.  Please check with the family prior to attending, as only 50 people are allowed to be present. Masks are required. 

Those who wish to remember Larry in a special way may make donations in his memory to the charity of their choice. The family politely declines flowers.
