Margaret E. Welsh, 88, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 13, 2020. Born January 10, 1932 in Lansing to Mark and Ruth (Nichols) McKie, Margaret spent her childhood in Holt and her adult life in Mason. She was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mason, where she played piano and organ and met her husband, Charles “Charlie” Welsh. They dated in high school and married after graduation, spending 67 wonderful years together.
Margaret loved music and was a gifted musician, playing for many church services, weddings, and even funerals. It was after playing the organ for many years at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes that Margaret began to work for the funeral home as a hostess, providing a welcoming face to the community at the Ball Dunn Chapel.
When she wasn’t making music, Margaret loved to travel, and she and Charlie made many motorcycle trips all over the country. Mackinaw Island and the Smokey Mountains held particularly special places in her heart, but she also treasured the train tours, camping trips, and river cruises. She enjoyed spending time by going out to eat with their friends and family, attending Spartan Women’s basketball games as season-ticket holders, and watching the Tigers. Margaret did the yard work, raising roses and many beautiful flowering shrubs. She continued this throughout her life and relied on daughters to weed and mow this past year while she sat out and watched, many times holding a beloved grand dog.
Margaret was a meticulous record-keeper and organizer, and her work ethic was second to none. She always found something to do that would improve her surroundings, whether it was cleaning, straightening, or organizing. She enjoyed her friendships and worked to maintain relationships over time – her mailbox is still filling up with Christmas cards from all her friends.
Above all, Margaret’s first love was Charlie and her children and many grandchildren. She and Charlie spent much time attending birthday and holiday celebrations with the different family members. The addition of new babies and grand dogs were joyous occasions for her. Because of this, her grandchildren knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie; her parents; and her sisters, Elaine Eshelby and Betty Goodman.
Margaret’s memory will be cherished by many, but especially her children, Bradford (Marcia) Welsh, Melissa Welsh, and Michelle (Park) Peters; grandchildren, Steve (Amanda) Welsh, Jennifer (Gannon) Welsh, Amanda (Chris) Baker, Allison (Chris) Bannick, Kirsten (Dustin) Roberts, and Leif (Ann) Rolandson; her 19 great-grandchildren and her two great-great-grandchildren.
A Private Family interment will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Mason. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at 10:30am at Mason First Church of the Nazarene, 415 E Maple St, Mason, Michigan, so all can gather to remember and shares stories of Margaret’s incredible life.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Margaret’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
