A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, January 11 at Our Lady of Grace Church in Beverly Hills, Fla. Rev. Monsignor Cesar Petilla will preside. Visitation will follow the Mass from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Fero Funeral Home in Beverly Hills.
Desi was the son of Desiderio Sr. and Vicenta (Castillo) Segundo and raised in Laoag, Ilocos Norte on Luzon, the Philippines. He attended Far Eastern University in Manila where he earned his medical doctor degree.
He came to Milwaukee in 1963 and then practiced in Alberta and Newfoundland, Canada, while awaiting results of his U.S. residency application. He subsequently moved to the Detroit area where he practiced as an anesthesiologist at Pontiac General Hospital until retiring in 2000.
The Segundos lived in Rochester Hills, Mich. for 23 years before moving to a new home in Pine Ridge Estates, Beverly Hills, Fla. in 2000.
Desi loved music and was a member of the choir at Our Lady of Grace Church for many years. He faithfully played the violin at all funerals and Sunday Masses through Gaudete Sunday this Advent (December 13, 2020). With Ely, he had helped bring a lively Catholic charismatic movement from Michigan to Our Lady of Grace Church where it blended with an existing charismatic community.
Desi was intensely proud of his American citizenship. He was a child when the Japanese invaded the Philippines during World War II, and he told of being moved "from foxhole to foxhole" by guerilla family members to escape capture by the Japanese.
Desi is survived by his wife, Ely; son Desi III; sister Ethel Sievert; cousin Henidine Lowes; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial offerings may be sent to Our Lady of Grace Church, 6 Roosevelt Blvd., Beverly Hills, FL 34465.
