She was born in Alife, Italy on February 29, 1924 to Maria and Vincenzo Di Matteo.
It was 1943 when the Germans invaded Italy and the Nazi soldiers chased her and her family from their home to make it their headquarters. The Di Matteo’s lived off the land, sleeping on the ground and eating whatever could be found. Through this trying time, she developed a strength that would carry her through many of life’s difficulties. When the time came for them to return home much to their dismay, the soldiers had destroyed everything precious to them and they began the process of rebuilding their home and lives. They could once again partake in family meals around the table, which was of great value then and this tradition continues with her sister Rosa, and her family today.
Teresa met her husband Louis (Louie) in 1944 when he was working as an interpreter in the American Army. They married and made the life changing decision to move to America in 1946. Upon arriving in New York, she and Louie began the process of building a new life but never forgot their Italian heritage. While living there, she and Louie became parents to four children. Victoria (Vickie), Anthony, Vincenzo (Vinny) and Silvana. She became involved in the Italian American Club where she could reconnect with her roots and share her home cooked Italian dishes; which were a highlight of her life. She and Louie made the move to Arizona in 1986, quickly made friends and once again, became involved in the Italian American Club. Blending the "Old Country" with the new was important to her.
Teresa was in her element when every chair around her dining table was filled and the table laden with delicious home cooked food. You never left her home hungry and usually, took leftovers home with you! Her passion and life calling was family and friends. The more people filling her home with laughter and conversation, the better.
Although Teresa will be greatly missed, she is reunited with the ones she loved so much. Her husband, Louie. Her daughter, Victoria (Vickie) Manes. Her daughter, Silvana (Murray) Smith and her beloved grandson, Michael Murray.
Teresa Manes is survived by her two sons, Anthony and Vinny, her grandson John, her sister, Rosa and many nieces and nephews in Italy.
Her Funeral Service will take place at St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church, 1030 North Hayden Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85257 on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 10:00 am, with Interment at Green Acres following the service.
