

She graduated from Scottsdale Community College with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1980. But that was only the beginning. While working for the Garrett Corporation, she completed a Bachelor's Degree in Management with distinction graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1982. She added a Master's Degree two years later with high distinction, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Her Master's dissertation was titled: Presenting Change: A Standardized Job Evaluation System for Non-Exempt Positions in the Garrett Corporation. Her thesis is a bound book in the Library of Congress. It is still used today as the basis for job position re-evaluations. She did all of this while working full-time and as a single mother. Garrett Corporation later became Allied Signal and then Honeywell Corporation.
Lucy was a champion for employees. She was recognized many times by different organizations for her efforts. She served as the President of the local chapter of the National Association of Suggestion Systems. The Casa Grande Chapter also gave her Special Recognition for her work on the "Employee Recognition and Reward Systems for Hourly Employee Compensation Design Team." She earned the Employee of the Year Award for Phoenix 1995.
She is survived by her brother Maurice Staples of Chandler and a son Donald Benjamin of Ahwatukee. Her son James Johnsen, Jr. preceded her in death last year.
Services will be at Green Acres Scottsdale on December 18, 2020. Visitation will be from 10-10:45 am, with service starting at 11 am.
