Obituary of Marvin Merle Hicks
Marvin Merle Hicks, 87, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 3rd 2018 at the Hospice House of Bloomington. Marvin was one of 4 sons born in Cannelton, Indiana to Grace Ann and Harrison Isaac Hicks. Marvin spent most of his childhood in Tell City, Indiana. Marvin was a generous, loving, and sweet man to who kindness was an instinct. He was dearly loved by all who knew him. If a life of man is to be measured by all those who loved him then Marvin’s life was truly a life beyond measure and his impact will ripple through many generations yet to come. Marvin served in the US Navy as a young man, protecting and defending the Nation he loved. He later continued his service to his country while working at Naval Weapons Support Center (NWSC) in Crane, Indiana as an Electronic Engineer and retired in the early 1990’s. He was a long time member of the Bloomington Chapter of Amvets. He passionately enjoyed woodworking. Marvin was a man who had a difficult time slowing down. After his official retirement he greatly enjoyed working as an all-around ‘Mr. Fix It’ for several years at Candleberry Lane in Bloomington Indiana until the business closed their workshop. After his time at Candleberry Lane he focused his passion on pen making and greatly enjoyed participating in festivals and craft shows. He was able to continue his craftsmanship until only days before he passed. Throughout his life he also enjoyed many other hobbies including gardening, building, wine tasting, and traveling. Marvin married the love of his life, Judith B. Spradlin on March 7th, 1957 in Evansville, Indiana. He was a devoted husband who was looking forward to being reunited with his wife who preceded him in death and whom he was sure was waiting to welcome him home. He was the proud and exceedingly loving father of 5 children: Susan Parkerson of Greenfield, Indiana; Timothy Hicks of Bloomington, Indiana; Laurel Hicks of Plainfield, Indiana; Jody Arthur of Plainfield, Indiana, and Amanda Trenta of Bloomington, Indiana. He was the adoring Grandfather to 7 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers Harrison ‘Chum’ Hicks and John ‘Joe’ Hicks, and son-in-law Edward Parkerson. He is survived by his children and their spouses and loved ones, grandchildren, remaining brother, Loren Hicks, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Marvin’s life will be memorialized on March 10th, 2018 at Deremiah Frye Mortuary, Greene and Harrel Chapel, 700 W Gourley Pike, Bloomington, IN 47404.
