Dorothea was born on April 10, 1928, in Munich, Germany, to the late Karl and Anna Krieger Scheide. She spent over 50 years working with her husband, Hermann Schladitz. Their research lab was based in Munich, focusing on chemical vapor deposition. She earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Munich. In 1978, they moved to Charlottesville to work at the University of Virginia in a scientific research capacity in the Materials Science department of the School of Engineering. After leaving UVA, they continued their research in a private lab they founded.
With personal experience with hemophilia, Dorothea was involved with the bleeding disorders community throughout her adult life. She also enjoyed volunteering for Love INC in Charlottesville.
In addition to her parents, Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband, Hermann Schladitz, her son, Thomas Schladitz, and her brother, Hermann Scheide.
Dorothea is survived by her son and his wife, Herbert and Elisabeth Lechner of Marklkofen, Germany; her daughter and son-in-law, Jeff and Christine Krecek of Troy; three grandsons in Virginia (Karlo, Alexander, Nicholas) and three granddaughters (Anna, Nina, Nora) and one great-granddaughter (Emily) in Germany. Dorothea adored all of her grandchildren and particularly enjoyed the many adventures she had with her grandsons.
