Obituary of Joyce Sample
Joyce Ann Camp Sample, age 83, passed away quietly on Saturday, November 18, in Newport News, VA. Joyce was born on April 3, 1934 in Lansing, MI, to Winifred Emma Wright Meyers. She was adopted on August 20, 1936 by Paul D. and Irene H. Camp of Tecumseh, MI, and later of Charleston, WV. Joyce graduated from Charleston High School in 1951. She attended the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1955. On April 8, 1955 Joyce married James R. Sample, son of William J. and Ruby Lotus Sample of Morgansville, WV. at Broad St. Methodist Church, Richmond, VA. Following college, she moved to Hampton, VA and began her nursing career at the old Riverside Hospital in downtown Newport News. She lived in Hampton, Yorktown, and Newport News, VA, and worked at local medical facilities and as a Certified Childbirth Educator teaching Lamaze classes for many years. Joyce was most proud of the many babies born under her tutelage. Joyce was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Hampton, VA. She was a life member of the Medical College of Virginia (VCU) Alumni Association. She was very creative and will be especially remembered for her life-long passion for sewing, counted cross-stitch sewing, other many hobbies she enjoyed, and numerous activities with her family and grandchildren. Survivors include her sons, James Douglas, and Paul Jennings and wife, Ann Sample; daughter, Myra Ann, and husband, Jon Matthews; grandchildren, Jamie, Randy, and Nick Sample; Amber Matthews; and Keely, Erich, and Erin Sample, and several nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Paul D. and Irene Hickman Camp; husband, James R. Sample; daughter, Dana Lynn, and son, William L. Sample. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 am, Monday, November 27, 2017 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are welcome at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1509 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA 23666.
