Obituary of Richard Carlton Milliman
Richard “Dick” Carlton Milliman, United States Army Sergeant Major (Retired), age 90, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018. He was born in Elbridge, New York, January 1928, and has resided in Hampton since 1967. Richard was preceded in rest by his parents, Clarence and Helen Milliman of Weedsport, New York, four brothers and a sister, and his wife of 66 years, Juliana “Julie” Milliman of Hampton. He is survived by his sons, Robert Milliman (Christa) of Newport News, Dennis Milliman (Christine) of Buffalo, New York, Gary Milliman (Sharon) of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Marc Milliman (Twila) of Hampton, and Raymond Milliman (Sheila) of Hampton; daughters, Patricia Milliman of Hampton and Nancy Berryman (Jay) of New Kent County; and a sister, Sandra DiLella (Frank) of Elbridge, New York. Richard entered the Army in January 1946 and retired after 30 years of service. He attained the rank of Sergeant Major and retired from Fort Eustis, Virginia, 31 December 1975. He served in Italy, Germany, Korea, Vietnam, and several bases in the United States. It was an assignment to Fort Monroe in 1962 that brought Dick and his family to the Hampton area and determined that “this is where we are going to retire”. During his assignment to Allied Forces Headquarters, Rome, Italy, 1946-1947, he met Julie and they were married November 19, 1947. They celebrated the marriage for 66 years until her death in August 2014. Dick was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam, the Meritorious Service Medal, and several Army Commendation Medals from various assignments and duties. Upon retirement from the Army, he attended Christopher Newport College earning a degree in Business Administration in 1979. In 1983 he was employed by Northrup Worldwide Aircraft Services, Inc., Fort Eustis Division, Installation Supply Department, as Supervisor, Customer Assistance Branch, until his retirement in February 1991. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather of thirteen, and great grandfather of seventeen. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and crafts; making items for Julie to paint and give for gifts. Richard was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Buckroe since 1967, and an Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council 511. Visitation will be held Monday, May 14, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00am on Tuesday, May 15th at Saint Joseph Catholic Church with Father Eric officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park with full military honors.
