Obituary of H. Dean Reckard

H. Dean Reckard, 97 of Huntington passed away on Monday, March 1, 2021 at Heritage Pointe of Huntington. Dean was a 1942 graduate of Huntington Township High School. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 – 1945 on the USS Amesbury DE-66 escort in the North Atlantic for 18 months, one year on the USS Klondike in the Pacific. He was a Machinist Mate 3rd Class and was involved in the first seven days of the Normandy Invasion – D Day. Dean worked his entire life as a mechanic. He worked as a mechanic for 10 years at Reckards Truck Repair and 21 years on contract with the Huntington County Community School Corporation as a bus repair mechanic. He was a member of New Hope United Brethren in Christ Church. Dean loved to fish and was a very talented woodworker. He and his wife Elsie wintered in Mission, Texas for 20 years. He was a member of the Indiana Winnebago Club. Dean was born on January 22, 1924 in Huntington, the son of the late Walter and Flora (Rupley) Reckard. He was united in marriage to Elsie M. Wine on December 23, 1943 at the Huntington Church of the Brethren. They were married 77 years. Survivors include his wife: Elsie Reckard of Huntington; two daughters: Kay (Doug) Beaver of Huntington, Dee (Gary) Montel of North Manchester; 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by two sons: Ken and Hal Reckard; two sisters: Marjorie Walker, Beatrice Wampler; a brother: Meredith Reckard and a granddaughter: Churie Owen. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2021 from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington with funeral service to follow the visitation at 3:00 pm. We will be following the CDC’s and Indiana’s guidelines for Mask's, Social Distancing and Social Gathering Limits. Private interment will be at the Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made out to Huntington Senior Center in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
